What you get:

Your membership in JALT has other tangible benefits besides a nice entry on your resume under "Professional Activities". You get:

  • A 12-issue subscription to The Language Teacher magazine. This includes feature articles, teaching tips and lesson plans that work, book reviews, meeting and conference announcements, and job advertisements. This magazine is also available in bookstores such as Kinokuniya for 950 yen per issue.
  • A 2-issue subscription to the JALT Journal, containing practical and theoretical articles, as well as research reports. The JALT Journal is also available through Kinokuniya for 950 yen per issue.
  • You will receive discounts on registration fees for the Annual JALT International Conference, as well as advance conference information.
  • Substantial discounts on local chapter meeting fees. Nearly all local meetings are free to JALT members.

What you pay:

A regular membership for someone in Japan costs 10,000 yen.

This means you save 3,300 even if you never come to a meeting! That's right. You get 13,300 yen worth of useful publications for 10,000 yen.

That's not all. Every meeting you attend for free saves you an additional 500 to 1000 yen. Add in the discounts on the national conference, and you're way ahead.

Save more!
If you share the same address with another person who's also interested in JALT, you can both join as joint members for only 8,500 yen each.

Save even more!
Why not receive the same benefits, yet save even more money? You can if you get at least four other people to join with you. Group memberships (five people or more) are 6,500 yen for each person.

How you join:

There are two easy ways to join. One is to come to a JALT meeting and join on that day. But why wait? The faster way is to contact a chapter membership chair to request a membership application postal money order form. You can bring the postal money order form to any Japanese post office.

Joining at meetings
When are the meetings near you? If you live in Fukuoka, you can see Fukuoka JALT's events calendar at <fukuoka.html>. If you're in a different part of Japan, see the JALT Calendar or the ELT Calendar for Japan.
Contacting JALT for Membership Forms
Kyushu:
If you live in Kyushu, see the local chapter page of the Kyushu-based chapter of JALT nearest you and ask for a membership form. Be sure to provide a mailing address because they will send you a postal money order form that you can bring to your local post office.

If you're in a different part of Japan, see the contact information for all JALT chapters to find the one nearest you.

Outside Japan
If you're outside Asia, then contact the JALT Central Office directly, but note that the fees above are different for overseas subscriptions:
